A SURPRISING 2020 !

A word from Victor Quijada
Founder, Artistic Director and Choreographer, RUBBERBAND

2020 – What a year!
Big, BIG love to all of our friends & your families for making it through the challenges of these past 9 months!!
Please, let us NOT forget the amazing first 2.5 months of this year, and let us appreciate all of the amazing virtual connections this pandemic has caused us to engage in, and discover.

My sincerest condolences go out, for all of the losses experienced during this year… there have been far too many.
For me, 2020 underscored the importance of family, of health, and of staying focused on what is truly important.
Nothing is guaranteed.

In 2021, I wish you all: peace, power, hope, happiness, and success!

“Life is 10 percent what you make it and 90 percent how you take it.”

A word from Fannie Bellefeuille
Executive Director, RUBBERBAND

To everyone whose path we’ve crossed with during this very peculiar year: RUBBERBAND has become more human and open because of you, which is why I want to thank you. Let’s continue to go forward, without restraint, without fear, and without forgetting all those who are behind us.

TRENZADO

After three intense, emotion-filled weeks of creation, on November 13, we were able to present Trenzado at Théâtre Outremont before a much-reduced audience.

With Trenzado, Victor Quijada, an American citizen of Mexican descent who became a Canadian choreographer, revisits his history with a touch of nostalgia. Building progressively on the themes of “roots”, “borders”, “native land”, and “loss”, the piece explores the physical and emotional limits that confront us when we are uprooted from our milieu and must reconstruct and redefine ourselves. Trenzado brings out the hope we carry within us when the time comes to start all over again.
Articulated in two complementary parts evolving around an aluminum structure by visual artist Sylvain Baumann, Trenzado fuses contemporary dance, theatre, and a refined movement vocabulary to reveal a surprisingly vulnerable creator. The production is imbued with the norteño style of Mexican music (corrido and ranchera), deconstructed and recontextualized by composer Jasper Gahunia.

Trenzado marks Victor Quijada’s return to the stage, accompanied by four of the company’s dancers: Amara Barner, Jean Bui, Sydney McManus, and Paco Ziel.

CREATING LINKS – Autumn 2020 was full of projects and collaborations!

Filigrane Archives & Danse Danse
In November, we were featured in a documentary vignette focussed on Quebec choreographers who have brought street-dance styles onto the contemporary stage through pure, hybrid, or blended approaches. Victor Quijada was in the company of Handy “MonstaPop” Yacinthe, Alexandra “Spicey” Landé, Vladimir “7Starr” Laurore, Ismaël Mouaraki, Axelle “Ebony” Munezero, Sovann Rochon-Prom Tep, and Yvon Soglo, alias  CrazySmooth.

In the framework of the Danse Danse presentation of Ce que le jour doit à la nuit, a work by Compagnie Hervé Koubi.

KOTV & Télé-Québec
We were also invited by KOTV to be in a three-part dance program to be broadcast by Télé-Québec in winter 2021. Under director François Blouin, Victor Quijada reimagined Ever So Slightly (ESS) for the camera. 1 week of rehearsal, 2 days of shooting, 7 dancers, 1 exceptional site: this was an electrifying project, a little crazy, and thoroughly intoxicating! We can’t tell you any more at the moment, but we’re very eager to show you the result.

ONLIKE TALKS

As health restrictions are still preventing us from performing live, we devised new ways to reach our audiences. We’ve created several digital activities based not only on past productions, works currently in creation, and the RUBBERBAND Method, but also on Victor Quijada’s choreographic journey. These virtual artist talks, available in French, English, and Spanish, are wonderful meetings involving the public, the new generation of dancers, artists and artistic collaborators in spontaneously exchanges.

In 2020, the team also benefitted by the arrival of new members:
